As far as I know they had to alter the complete car the fenders for example are longer than the stock ones... imagine a little parking damage with either one of these babies!

Alter the entire car... That's one way to put it.
The recipe was quite simple. Pop over to your local Porsche dealer, and drive off in a brand new 928S. Put it in your garage, and remove the body from the floorpan. Then, you take a few Golfs, cut them to pieces, and build a new Golf-looking body over the 928 floorpan. The only standard body parts are the doors.
