Default Mk2 16v Starting problems

My golf has been off the road for a few weeks and now i can't get it started.

I have recharged the battery but still won't start, the voltage reads 12.87 using a multimeter. The starter motor clicks and there is a wheezing noise from the ignition system?

However it won't start any ideas?

starter could be sticking try hiting it with a hammer fairly lightly, test the starter by earthing a screwdriver to the block to see if it turns.
other than that check your wiring and try holding the key on for a while sometimes that helps .......

Default Still won't start

Thanks for replying and sorry i have not got back sooner, i have tried tapping it with a hammer and holding the ignition key down for a few seconds but will only start by bump starting. Could this still be a sticking motor or is a replacement in order?

If the battery's been fully charged but there is no life even when hammering on the starter, it's probably the internal relay inside the starter solenoid that's the problem. I dont think you can buy the solenoid separate, so you may have to replace the starter for a new/used one.

it can be the relai in y'r fuse box too, or a cable that's missing.

take the wire from the starter, let someone turn the key and check the voltage on the wire too see if everything but the starter works.

My battery was broken resulting in the same problems. Perhaps switching the battery for a quick test is an option?
