Gol German
Well, as promised, here is the post about my project.
The original car is/was a VW Gol CL 1.6 1991. At this year the "Autolatina" was still on, so "unfortunatelly" my car came with a pieceofcrap 1.6 CHT engine (a French (PUG, I think) engine that was bought by Ford in the 70's or 80's). So my car is a VW with a Ford engine that was designed by PUG... Well, since I'm not going to use it, to hell with it... This is how I bought the car, about 2 months ago: Not in the best shape, but the REAL shape was beneath the carpet... The only two lil' problems: It took me about a year to find it, but was worth the long wait... Last week the cage was finished: And with it I bought some stuff: Why would I want AIR when you can have extra-power!!!! LOL, yeah, well, this dash was kind of "rebuilt" with fiberglass... but since I took it in a good deal, that's not a problem. Other than that, I'm thinking of closing the other side... kind of a clean look for the interior... Anyone interested in buying rear RECARO seats??? The RECAROS (this is not how I'll use 'em, I'll change those fake leathers): ORIGINAL RECARO!! Central console that'll be modified Well, this project will take a LONG time 'cause I've to work part-time and study all together. I'll need some advices about something I'm planning... but that will come in the right time... For now, thats all folk's... |

I actually didn't know that some VWs came with Ford engines (except the VW-badged Fords, of course) during the AutoLatina period, even though I do know that some Fords came with VW engines.
The CHT is originally a Renault engine, and not a good one either. We got lots of Brasilian made Escorts here in Norway the early 1980s, fitted with the CHT engine. These Escorts, which all carried the LX trim level, rusted badly, even worse than their German counterparts. They were very low priced when they were new (around 2/3 of a German Escort), so they sold as hot cakes. We had both 1.3 and 1.6 versions of the Escort LX, but the Wiki site doesn't mention a 1.3. I cant remember if the 1.3 was a CHT or a different Renault or Ford powerplant though.

is that cage bolted or welded? cause it looks weird at the top near the B-Pillar?

Correct, it's Renault!! I've forgotten...
This model of Escort is becoming rare to see here (I've seen about 4 in the last years), one in a really good shape and the others all fcked'up... The only models of the late 60's and 70's that can be seen around here (in "usable" shape) are Chevrolet (Chevette and Opala) and VW (of course...). About the cage, yes, it's bolted. I want this car to be a street legal, but here in Brazil the traffic law is passing trough some changes, so it's not fully defined if it's legal or not to use the cage... |

Low power, but high economy. I have a Parati 92' with this engine (1.6 liters) and it's nice. It works as a brand new engine. The Escort is a poor car, with a bad rear suspension, and it has problems with corrosion. |

Just to remember, Parati is the station wagon of Gol, and my Parati is a Parati CL 92, the most simple Parati ever made that year...

Well, it's been a while since last post (2 years... lol)
The project is coming to life. I'm trying to keep it going with some kind of regularity, but I depend mostly on the guys doing the body service. Now I think it's going faster (well, I HOPE at least....) This is how it went on the last couple of years: 1st. of July - 2008 Some disassembly on course. The front panel and fenders where traded with the owner of the shop so that he could use it on a crashed Voyage (American FOX). 19th. of August - 2009 A year later I continued investing on the project. Bought some original parts so that all body parts could be assembled. These where kind of difficult to get but was worth the trouble: 3rd. of September - 2009 After buying those parts, the body adapting continued. Since I'm making a kind of reversed "face-lift", the front and rear panel needed to be changed. The work started at the rear one, using the original tail lights as reference: 23 of January - 2010 Bought a set of steelies that are kind of rare here in Brazil and widened them from 6" to 8". They where used as reference so that I could enlarge the fenders: 31 of March - 2010 After using the wheels as reference the fenders where enlarged using a MIG/MAG and sheets of steel. The front fender and panel where also assembled. They are still being adjusted so "don't mind the gaps".... lol 31 of March - 2010 This last weekend I received some more original parts, and went in a "little trip" of about 1000 km to São Paulo to bring another original part: First, the original bumpers: The front end in a pre-assemble. Needs just some minor adjustement: And finally the pieces I brought from São Paulo: 3 little letters written on the head... Well, this is it for now. As soon as I have some more news I'm going to try to update here! []'s |

Sorry for the delay on this answer guys, but I've been with my schedule pretty full for a long, long time.
Well, here we go again with some updates (January/2011): "Pistones IASA" from the neighborhood (Argentina): Crank re-finished: Intake manifold from an Audi A3, that will be properly adapted: Block re-finished too: Reinforcements on the structure, necessary for the use of stiffer suspension (or else... "crack"... hehehe): And now to the "shopping-list": Some springs and shocks from a place far-far-away from here (and really close to you...): The "EVIL TWINS".... Polyurethane bushings: Upper and lower strut-bar: Air-filter (with REALLY low restriction): And finally a set of wheels that I will modify later: |

Hey Tjaap, still going, slowly but going...
Some pics that I took in the beggining of the year: The car is on the paint shop while I am searching for some rare pieces of the original model. |
