VIN birthday request of your TYPE 2 Bay Windows
Hi guys,
this is my first thread on this fantastic forum. I'd like to ask your help.I'm building a website dedicated to VW aircooled (and not only that --> www.inerd.it ) one of the 1st content I've activated is a funny service: the possibility to check your birthday VW aircooled by puttin' in the VIN only. It is based on the famamous tables given with the two magazine 'Beetle age finder' and 'Bus and type 3' age finder. Unfortunately, for type 2 (and 3 only), there's no information about 70-eis chassis.... well...therefore type 2 buses have the m-code plate!! Can you share me the birthday value in relationship with your chassis number? I want to create a sample table that intepolates value: so the error will not be more than one month!!! I will not use any pics you gave me neither publish your values: the only purpose is that chassis number allows the web page to give a reference, in compare with others, to the server web that will respond with a month and year of production. thank you in advance for your help. In particular m.y. 1973 and m.y. 1974 and 1976 are missing (I've got few samples)!!! need Milano Italy Last edited by need : 12-07-2007 at 13:42. |

I have both a 1970 and a 1973 Type 3. Are their VINs and build plates of interest to you?

Yes of course, because also type 3 hasn't been printed after 1967. But I don't know if they contains m-plate or a prod date like from beetles of '69 and above.
Try to find a plaque similar to this one available on vw 1302.... http://www.1302super.com/page22.html thank you need Last edited by need : 12-07-2007 at 20:21. |

Both my Type 3s have this. Heck, even my 87 Audi has it! It's too dark outside to take pics now, but I'll see if I can get it done tomorrow.

Sure! Sorry for didn't do that before.
Thank to volksforum.com to host me in this space. My name is Daniele Mariani and I live in a little village between Milano and Bergamo, italy. I'm 31 years old and my job is informatic engeener. I love 'spotting' serial numbers of vintage vw and try to recognize the prod and purchase period, helped by sign plate sometimes. I belong to "Maggiolino Käfer Club", Lissone Milano ( www.maggiolino.it ). Maggiolino is the italian nickname for beetle ('ino' means little to the end of italian words, so super beetle are called maggiolone --> 'one' means big) Well I own a beetle '6v 1963 turkish green: only 90000km with perfect interior. Original '63 plate from Torino, Italy. The only problem is paint: must be repainted because you can see the primer behind!!! No rust at least!!!! The second is a VW 1302 m.y. 1971, restored and (bad) repainted from previous owner with pastel white (original was shantung yellow, sigh!!! sush as rare color 'wasted' with the 'common' L90D!!!!) I want to speak about my 1st passion: spotting italian signplates. In Italy from 1927 to 1994, we used plates in relationship with town land. The plates were black with white chars until 1985, then white with black chars. From 1994 there is a national common unified serialization that starded from AA 000 AA ... (now we reached DJ 000 AA more or less!!). The plates can't follow the owner, and in the past if you were selling the car to another man outside of your city land, he had to replace it, losing the 'originality'. With 1994 law, the old plates remains on the old italian car forever (or until they sold aborad!!!): so I've found a Torino's original one, bought after the new codification. The 1302 is original as well!!! That's why here in Italy old cars imported from abroad, with new sign plates sounds strange!!! What about Holland: I can see some cars with old black plates....? here one pics of my 6v greetings Last edited by Tjaap : 13-07-2007 at 23:55. |

Ok, here's the information from my two Type 3s.
The green car is the 1970 Variant, VIN 3602066435, it was built on Oct. 29th, 1969. And the light blue car the 1973 Variant L, VIN 3632088799. It was made on April 10th, 1973. More info on these tags can be found here: http://www.hallvw.clara.net/dating.htm

Welcome!
Dutch license plates: Each car has it's own plates. They plates will stay with the car till it dies or is sold abroad. You can't buy plates with a special text on it. You will just get the code that is availeble at that moment. Way back we had black plates with white characters till 1978 I believe (they are 00-AA-00). After that date we got the yellow plates (AA-AA-00). When they were all used we started with 00-AA-AA. If you import an older car to the Netherlands you will get a new plate aswell. So your 92 Golf might look like an 2007 Golf if you look at the licenseplate only. If your import car is from 1978 or older you can get a set of black plates if you want that. Pretty much the same as Norway then. Quote:
Is there any form for system in the plates, like numbers telling the year, or letters for a specific district?

Yes, there is a system!
The higher the characters are in the alfabet and the same for the numbers the younger the vehicle is. A car with license 45-AA-AA is way younger then a car with this license: 43-ZZ-ZZ And that's how it works. For trucks, motors, trailers/caravans (total weight above 750kg) and company vehicles we have different starting codes. For example motorbikes, they start with an M, so: MA-AA-00 and the higher in the alfabet the letters go and same for the number, the younger the bike is (if it isn't imported). And that is the registration date, for example a showroomcar can be older (a year for example) then the license. Here you can see the newest license plate: https://www.rdw.nl/Ovi/Paginas/Default.aspx So if you now which plates go with what year you can tell how long the car is in the Netherlands. And most of the time how old it is. |

nope the former one is older then the 2nd one.. the numbers don't count for the age, just the letters

I really didn't understand much of that
We have a simple system here, at least. Each DMV station has it's set of letters, and the numbers are consecutive. Normally, the plates follow the car for it's entire lifetime, but a new registration number is normal if your plates have been stolen. Example: Oslo started with DA back when the plates were introduced, not they are at DL. So, the first car registered in Oslo with these plates, which were introduced in 1971, was DA 10000. Following DA 99999 was DB 10000 and so on.
