Vielen Dank! To all.
Well right now, the Notch has his rear up in the air and no engine. I'm converting the swing to IRS this winter. I am going to weld the wishbone horns on the IRS so it will be rigid and not require the rear engine mount. I'm also having a beefed up IRS transaxle built too. 3.88 ring and pinion with a heavy duty side plate and welded third and fourth, and a .82 ratio on the fourth gear. I would like to be able to cruise 75-80 mph on the interstate without hurting the engine. I only have until march, because that is when our first events begin.

Very nice car!
Have you considered the 5-speed conversion from Gene Berg? I drove a 72 Square with a 2-liter engine and 5-speed and this car had no problems cruising 80 mph from Portland, OR into Idaho, when I and the owner were going to the first Type 3 Invasion back in 2002. I'm talking about Toby Erkson and his orange Square, if you're familiar with the North West US Type 3 scene.

Yes, I have cosidered the 5-speed option, both berg and the 901. The berg is way to expensive and fifth is still .82. You just have one more gear to row through to get there. It would be good to have the close ratio 1-4, but I can't justify the cost since I'm not racing the car. The 901 option was considered too, but with the initial cost, car modifications involved (don't want to cut on my notch) and the fact that 1st is weaker and 5th is not much taller than .82, I decided against it.
My tranny guy said he could build an IRS tranny that would be tougher and have a gear set that would work too. With the 2 liter, having the tall 4th won't be a problem as it has plenty of bottom end. I am also looking into a EFI and turbo combo for next year...if I can scare up the cash.

Another option is the tranny from the 1974 Karmann Ghia. It supposedly has a 3.78:1 R&P compared to the regular 4.11:1 R&P.
I say supposedly, because the European models of both KG and 1303 (Superbeetle) with the 1600 cc engine has this, but a far as I have been told, only the KG got this tranny for the US market.
